URINARY excretion of 17-ketosteroids in scurvy.

چکیده
Cholesterol and ascorbic acid of adrenals are significantly diminished in scorbutic guinea pigs (1). As these substances appear to be related to the formation of adrenal cortical hormone (a), it has been indicated that the secretion of this hormone might diminish in scurvy. The urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids in females is said to depend almost entirely on the activity of the adrenal cortex. In Addison’s disease in women the urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids either becomes nil or is decreased to approximately one-third of the normal excretion (3). In the absence of adrenals in monkeys 17-ketosteroids excretion is also markedly reduced (4). To furnish further evidence regarding the function of the adrenal cortex in scurvy the urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids has been studied in both normal and scorbutic female guinea pigs. As inanition per se reduces the urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids (5), the paired feeding technique has been used during this investigation.

Urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroids in children.
Determination of the urinary excretion of 1 7-ketosteroids (17-oxosteroids) is the most important laboratory test in the investigation of endocrine disorders involving the adrenal cortex and gonads in children. The normal range of excretion varies with the method employed, since non-steroidal pigment may to a greater or lesser degree be measured as 17-ketosteroid. It is important therefore to k...
متن کاملThe suprarenal function in allergic asthma. Determination of the plasma and urinary 17-OH-corticoids and of the urinary 17-ketosteroids before and after ACTH Zn.
Introduction The connection between suprarenal function and allergic diseases has been the subject of some investigation. In 1922, Kenipow found that anaphylactic reactions were increased in guinea pigs whose suprarenal glands had been partially removed. Later Eriksson-Lihr et al.°found that the daily excretion of the 17-ketosteroids was decreased in allergic dis eases; these observations were...
متن کاملThe Neutral 17-Ketosteroids in Rheumatoid Arthritis and Spondylitis.
Sjovall (1944), studying the excretion of folliclestimulating hormone, found that 21 per cent. of female patients under the age of 40 years suffering from rheumatoid arthritis showed evidence of pituitary-ovarian dysfunction. Davison and others (1947) found no significant alteration in the excretion of 17-ketosteroids in eleven female patients with rheumatoid arthritis, but reported an increase...
متن کاملInfluence of Occupational and Environmental Exposure to Low Concentrations of Polychlorobiphenyls and a Smoking Habit on the Urinary Excretion of Corticosteroid Hormones.
The effects of occupational exposure to low concentrations of polychlorobiphenyls (PCBs) on the urinary excretion of corticosteroid hormones were evaluated, taking into account the influence of cigarette smoking. The study included 26 males working as electrical maintenance staff in a steel factory, previously exposed to a mixture of PCBs (exposed workers), and 30 male workers with no occupatio...
متن کاملA Quantitative Study of the Urinary Excretion of Hypophyseal Gonadotropin, Estrogen, and Neutral 17-ketosteroids of Normal Men.
The urinary output of hypophyseal gonadotropin by normal women has proven exceedingly variable from month to month (1, 2). Thus, the usefulness of gonadotropin assays for clinical purposes has been disappointing and is now limited to the demonstration of large excesses of hormone. The status of the gonadotropin assay as a potential diagnostic measure in men is still in doubt. More normal data a...
